What do I need to know before visiting Sri Lanka?
For entering Sri Lanka, you need to have a passport that is valid at least six months after your arrival. The standard 30-days tourist visa can be obtained in advance online at www.eta.gov.lk. You can also obtain a visa at Sri Lankan embassies abroad or at Bandaranaike International Airport, although you have to pay a small penalty and pay in cash or credit card. There is no required vaccination but it is advised to discuss recommended vaccinations with a doctor.
What is the currency and how can I exchange or withdraw money?
The Sri Lankan currency is Sri Lanka Rupee (LKR or Rs). It is recommended to exchange money in Sri Lanka due to the often better exchange rate (compared with the rates abroad). In general, most currencies are accepted. You can withdraw money at several ATMs in Hikkaduwa. VISA, MasterCard as well as EC-card (with the Maestro symbol) are widely accepted. American Express and Diners are mostly not accepted.
Which clothing should I bring?
Lightweight and comfortable cotton clothes are best suited for the warm temperatures in Sri Lanka. You can also buy clothes in Hikkaduwa and Galle.
